Father of 18-year-old Tufail Matoo, Muhammad Ashraf, Tuesday said the state government approached him many times to withdraw the case of his son’s killing. But, he said, the family is steadfast to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. He said the family was also “threatened to hold back and not proceed further in the case.” The 12th class student Tufail Matoo of Saidakadal here was killed on June 11, 2010 after a police teargas shell hit him while returning home from tuitions. “Killers are moving freely. The family is being threatened to keep quiet and not ask for justice,” said Ashraf, addressing a press conference at Saidakadal, on the third martyrdom anniversary of his son. “Many times, the government tried to hush up the case by approaching us through different channels. But all we need is justice. Nothing else.” Tufail’s father said despite passing of three years, no one has been put on trial for his son’s ‘cold-blooded murder’. “Police are trying to shield their men involved in this killing and misleading the Court by cooking up stories,” he alleged. The family has sought support of international human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and said the “perpetrators should be tried in war tribunals framed under international law.” “I wrote a number of letters to Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch about the killing of my son at the hands of state police but no response was received from them,” he said. He said, “Where are the civil society and parliamentarians of India who visited Kashmir during the turmoil and committed that they will work for justice?” He said the state government assigned investigation of “cold-blooded murder” to officials who had “political affiliation” with the ruling parties. “Police are doing all this for petty privileges like promotions and awards to please the ruling parties,” he said, reading from a statement issued by Tahafuz-e-Insani Haqooq Committee Saidakadal. Former President High Court Bar Association and counsel for Tufail Matoo family Advocate Mian Qayoom narrated the case history to media persons.
