Fatwa of the Day Question: Is it permissible for a woman to pierce her tragus and what is the ruling on piercings for both men and women? Answer: Suffice it to say that to Allah alone belongs all praise and authority lies not in the arbitrary opinions of men rather in the established & succinct (Sarih & Sahih) guidance of the Quran & Sunnah; Both of which teach us that the default position regarding actions is one of permissibility and the burden of proof is upon the claimant. That said, body piercing for men & women will not be haram unless proven so by a Sahih & Sarih text. However in addition to this we do recognise that the sources do legitimise and authorise Urf (custom & convention) to play a regulatory role in influencing certain rulings to fluctuate between permissible, Makruh & even Haram when subjected to special circumstances & scrutiny but due to the arbitrary nature of this principle (Urf) it is confined and restricted to issues which are unanimously agreed upon within a given society mostly lingual etc. In this case e.g. A particular piercing which is perceived as 100% feminine, if however despite the application of Urf ambiguity persists this principle will lack instrumental value in influencing the resultant Hukm and therefore the ruling will return to its default judgement (permissibility). Pertaining to your question; it is permissible for girls to pierce any part of their ears, lip or brow etc. May Allah enlighten us all from His knowledge to always arrive at the objective Truth.
