Favourites fall, surprises abound in World Games eliminations Cali - Saturday, July 27, 2013 The mixed team eliminations took place this afternoon at the World Games followed by the individual eliminations through quarter-finals. The men’s competition saw the elimination of many favourites. In the first round, Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) was upset by his teammate Simon ROUSSEAU. The former world champion led until the final end, when his opponent came back at the last moment with 10-10-10 (victory 146-145). The only Colombian athlete, Camilo Andrés CARDONA, started the match against Patrizio HOFER (SUI) with 60 points, but couldn’t keep up his pace in the last three ends; he was stopped by the Swiss. In the 1/8 round, Reo WILDE (USA) shot clean except for a final 9, for the highest score of the field (149 points). Top qualifier Sergio PAGNI (ITA) had difficulty finding the 10, and was upset by Ritul CHATTERJEE (IND), 145-144. Tien Cuong NGUYEN (VIE) started his match against Martin DAMSBO (DEN) with 60 points, but dropped too many points in the last three ends, allowing the Danish archer to come back and win the match. Salvadorian Roberto HERNANDEZ (photo) defeated his famous teammate, former World Cup Final winner Jorge JIMENEZ, 146-144. Pierre-Julien DELOCHE (FRA) needed a shoot-off to defeat Steve ANDERSON (USA), while his teammate Dominique GENET lost his own shoot-off against Amir KAZEMPOOR (IRI). Finally, Peter ELZINGA (NED) beat Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX), and Paul TITSCHER (GER) outscored Simon ROUSSEAU 146-145. In quarter-finals, HERNANDEZ easily defeated CHATTERJEE, 148-142. DELOCHE gained one point over KAZEMPOOR in the second end, and kept it throughout for a victory 145-144. TITSCHER upset ELZINGA, punching his ticket to the semis, 146-144. Finally, WILDE outscored DAMSBO, 147-144. HERNANDEZ and DELOCHE will face off in the first semi-final, TITSCHER and WILDE in the second. On the women’s side, in the 1/16 round, Antalya World Cup winner Sara LOPEZ and Gabriela TREVINO (MEX) were tied until the Mexican scored a 6 in the fourth end, which gave the victory to the local archer. World silver medallist Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA) led Mino ABEDI (IRI) by one point before the final three arrows; that’s when the Iranian archer delivered a strong 10-10-10 to win the match, 141-139. Finally, Viktoriya BALZHANOVA (RUS), seeded 22nd, upset the N°11 seed Carli COCHRAN (USA). The 1/8 elimination round marked the entry of the top 9 from qualifications, and did not go without surprises. Double world champion and world N°1 Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) was the top scorer of the 1/8 round with 148 points. Thanks to her new world record, Erika JONES also qualified. So did Croatian Ivana BUDEN (main photo), Camilla SOEMOD (DEN), and the two Colombian athletes, Alejandra USQUIANO and Sara LOPEZ, both by just one point. USQUIANO defeated Olga BOSCH (VEN); meanwhile, European champion Kristina BERGER (GER) suffered a 7 in the first end, dropping three points that would cost her the match against LOPEZ. Second-seeded Ana MENDOZA (VEN), third at the Medellin World Cup, suffered a defeat versus ABEDI. Finally, Mexico’s Linda OCHOA, seeded third, would have lost her match if not for a final 5 by her opponent Mahtab PARSAMEHR (IRI). JONES and USQUIANO faced off in the quarter-finals, in a rematch of the Medellin final. After ties in the first two ends, JONES took the lead in the third end and went on to win the match, 144-143. In a match where 8s and 9s were more numerous than 10s, LOPEZ defeated LOGINOVA, 139-137. BUDEN easily took the lead against OCHOA, and won the match 144-140. Finally, SOEMOD defeated ABEDI by a five-point margin. JONES and LOPEZ will meet in the first semi-final, BUDEN and SOEMOD in the second one. In the mixed team event, world champion Italy and top qualifier USA were the highest scoring pairs of the quarter-finals with 157 points. Marcella TONIOLI and Sergio PAGNI defeated Iran easily, while the Americans Erika JONES and Reo WILDE met a tougher opponent in France; both pairs tied at the half, and the USA made the difference in the third end to win by two points. The pair from the host country, Alejandra USQUIANO and Camilo Andrés CARDONA, faced the number 3 seed Germany. Kristina BERGER and Paul TITSCHER trailed in the beginning, but gained a two-point lead in the third end, helped by an 8 by Colombia, and went on to win the match 152-149. Finally, Denmark’s Camilla SOEMOD and Martin DAMSBO outscored Mexico 155-153. The semi-finals will feature the USA against Denmark, and Germany against Italy. All individual and mixed team semi-finals and medal matches will take place tomorrow. World Archery Communication
