Fayemi heads APC’s 24-man national convention committee The All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday, inaugurated a 24-man committee for its December national convention where the party delegates would choose the party’s presidential standard-bearer ahead the 2015 elections. The national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who inaugurated the committee, named the former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, as chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, deputy chairman and Dr Alex Ideh as alternate secretary of the committee According to the party chairman, the committee would conduct the party primaries where former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former head of state, General Mohammadu Buhari, Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Mr Sam Nda Isaiah, among others, are vying to fly the party flag for the top office. Speaking further, he said, “We found the choice of chairman particularly difficult. We were even looking for retired judges at one stage but by flash of inspiration, it occurred to us that we have somebody in our midst who can be described virtually as white as snow and he was there all the time. But we were looking beyond our own terrain. So, I am very glad today. Yes, the membership is not complete yet. We have names and we are going to have another five additional names to this list. “There is an innovation in what we are trying to do and that is to assist this committee. The innovation is that we have asked every aspirant to nominate a representative on this committee. That is to bring out the level of transparency with which this exercise must be executed. We want them to be part of the process such that because they are committed, their principals will also be committed to the process. “So the challenge we are passing onto you today is to organise a process that will make us the by-word in this nation for internal democracy and for transparency. It was agreed that His Excellency, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, should act as deputy chairman for this exercise. So, the ball is in your court.”
