Featured Trumpet Video: German Foreign Minister Visits Christians in Iraq August 20, 2014 From theTrumpet On August 16, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited a church in Irbil’s Christian enclave of Ankawa. Christian Iraqis fleeing the advance of Islamic State terrorists have taken refuge in the city of Irbil, overwhelming its capabilities to support the refugees. Many are sleeping on streets and sidewalks or in open fields. Irbil lies in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq. Kurdish forces have withdrawn from many cities in northern and western Iraq as the Islamic State works to establish a caliphate. Christians in the region are following the Kurdish forces for protection. Steinmeier said he visited the region to get a picture of the situation on the ground. He met briefly with members of the clergy and took a tour around its facilities. He spent time with the internally displaced, listening to their stories of hardship. Earlier that day, the foreign minister announced that the German government would provide Iraq with more than $32 million in humanitarian aid. On August 15, the European Union also approved direct arms deliveries to Kurdish fighters battling the Sunni insurgents. Continue to watch for Europe to become more involved in the Middle East as the United States withdraws from the region. Germany has already taken the lead in giving aid to Iraq. Its particular interest in the Christian population can be seen in Steinmeier’s visit.
