Feeling like I have lived for centuries with the way technology is growing. I can still remember taking my hand written final project to this Typist near Leventis Store in Maiduguri in 1993. I can still see myself sitting on a small stool ,braving the hot sun and flies and reading through pages and pages of material while dealing with the “ ttrrrr trrr tap tap tap “noise coming from her typewriter. The sad part of the whole exercise was defending what I had researched in front of 4 professors who each had a copy of my work, “Factors affecting Poultry Production in Sub Saharan Region”. That was just struggling to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Agro Economics not even a Phd. Imagine all the time spent with a typist and just when you think you have done your best, Professor Ogumbemeru ( Bless his heart) reviews your typed project and corrects almost every page and you find yourself running back to the Typist, taking off the hard cover, get a stool and start the whole process again.. Auuuchhhhhh. In 1996, I welcomed yet another invention and I still remember dos and windows and the advent of internet. It was so exciting but guess what, there was really no privacy because it was so alien that the cyber café owner had everyone’s password or at least mine. The owner set up my first yahoo email account, wrote it on a piece of paper and I left Downtown Douala feeling like the most technologically advanced chick. Now, the third screen is so cute, it looks like a flat screen TV and when I see where Technology is taking us to, I can only say, one day, we will see Technologically made humans attending weddings and living like couples, driving cars etc.. Or maybe we already have ‘em. Okay people, getting Old is Mandatory but don’t leave this earth without making a contribution no matter how small. Ooops.. Happy Technology day..No I mean Thursday.
