Feeling the need for a special seasonal shout out to my B-I-L, Robert, my late sis, Megan, and years-long pal, Mike, who collectively evolved my musical tastes around this time of year, circa 1981, as childhood gave way to adolescence. During the holidays, Bob and Megan would be home from their respective schools, so Id get to sample their holiday soundtracks: Root Boy Slim, Ramones, Pogues, Waitresses, a lot of The Clash.... Meanwhile, Mike would get albums for Christmas, and I would follow suit, leading to time very well spent memorizing the lyrics to songs like The B-52s 52 Girls and Rock Lobster. And although Megan had a punk sensibility, in the spirit of the season she gave me my first two 45s, pulling from the disco rack: Does Your Mother Know by ABBA, and Anita Wards Ring My Bell. (Puberty made it sort of obvious Id be leaning disco....) So, in case youve never heard it, please sit back for about two minutes and enjoy one sound of the season, as heard through the filter of my Xmas angels.
