Feelings Are Fleeting Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 Without doubt, one of the most detrimental aspects of modern Western culture is the somewhat recent emphasis upon how one feels and allowing those feelings to dictate ones actions. This, in turn, has led to a society that is steeped in selfishness and the inability to make logical, proper decisions. Tragically, this problem has infiltrated the church as well, and the pews today are filled with professing Christians who attend services, fellowship with other believers, give to the Lords work, and serve God only if they feel like it. While God has, indeed, created mankind to experience feelings, it is imperative to realize that, because we are fallen human beings, our sin nature infects our feelings and causes them to be, simply, wrong at times. We cannot trust our feelings and we must not allow our emotions to dictate our choices. The Lord warns, He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool (Prov.28:26). The Bible addresses several truths concerning our feelings that we will consider over the next few days. First, we must realize that feelings are fleeting. As opposed to propositional truth, feelings (ones mood, emotions, sentiments, reactions, opinions) are subject to change-sometimes due to circumstances or sometimes for no apparent reason at all. Because of this fact, our feelings are completely unreliable; therefore, we must ,make every decision based upon what we know to be right and true rather than how we feel at the moment. God alone (changes) not (Mal.3:6); He and His Word are the secure foundation upon which we are to build our lives (Lk.6:46-49; 1 Cor.3:11). Truth, not emotion, must always be the basis for our choices and actions. MDC
