Fell asleep with the TV on and woke up to a review of the news of 2014. All bad news. Riots in Ferguson, plane disappears, school shootings, shooting of police officers, botched Ebola case, and on and on... I know all of these events occurred and should be reported... But I swear if I won the mega millions, I would start a news channel that reported only GOOD news. I would call it GNN (Good News Network). The fact is that there is so much good going on out there on the world that far outweighs the bad, but is not noticed. It has long been a journalistic mantra that only bad news sells. That may well be true but certainly there is a niche market in this wide, wide world for a steady diet of good news. If you want bad news and negative commentary it is very easy to find. If you want good news about good deeds of good people (which is much more common in the everyday world than all of the bad happenings) there is nowhere to find it. I am NOT talking about religious good news but actual good stories of survival, generosity, kindness, neighborliness, friendship and love that happen all around us every day. I see tons of it in our own little neighborhood in Arizona. People helping others, people volunteering, people displaying graciousness and kindness in a multitude of ways. And people having FUN and LAUGHING. Sure, there is the feel good story at the end of network nightly news, but there are so many stories of good deeds and heroism out there that go untold. I really believe that if we celebrated good works and FUN the way we celebrate all of the bad news, that more people everywhere would strive to enjoy life and reap the obvious benefits (including better health - mentally AND physically) of doing good things, helping others and truly making a positive difference in the world. - John Dittrich.
