Ferguson, and the death of the Brown kid, is going through the standard interpretations by the standard parties. Those with a racial agenda are exploiting the white cop shoots black teenager narrative; while civil libertarians are lamenting the existence of a domestic police force that increasingly acts as judge, jury, and executioner in morally ambiguous situations. It seems to me, that the most significant lesson is being overlooked. The millennial generation, regaled with the myths of an older generation, seeks to repeat the same victories, utilizing the same means, in an entirely different time. Taking to the streets and demanding justice is about as quaint as staging a repeat of the Freedom Rides through the South, or marching to the Washington Monument. Its pantomime of something that maybe used to be meaningful. The real instruction lies in how easily manipulated the masses are by mainstream media and national myths. Popular outrage is as whimsical and melodramatic as the fits of a toddler. And typically about as effective.
