Fewer false alarm callouts in Burys hospitals 13 Mar 2014 The work carried out by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services protection staff has paid dividends, as it transpired firefighters are now responding to fewer false fire alarms in hospitals in Bury. In a bid to lower the figure, a series of awareness discussions took place with the managers of three of the towns biggest hospitals - Fairfield, Alpha and Prestwich. As a result of such meetings, it was decided to introduce a five-minute delay in certain units. This change allowed onsite fire wardens to see whether or not a fire had broken out, before the crews were called out. Such prevention measures have meant crews in Bury attended 30 per cent fewer automatic false alarms in the calendar year of 2013, in comparison to 2012. Chair of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority Councillor David Acton said: In the last five years, we have slashed our attendance to false alarms in half as a result of proactive work with businesses and organisations across the county. Protection officers on every borough work closely with local business owners and organisations to raise awareness of the impact of false alarms and give advice on how to reduce them - and this work will continue. He added how, in addition to this, handlers in control rooms were challenging an increasing number of calls to automatic fire alarms and, when the situation necessitated it, asked callers to check for signs of a fire before an appliance was deployed. Bury Station Manager Mark Threader stressed how frustrating false alarms were, as it hindered crews ability to be available for genuine emergencies. He also highlighted the dangers of repeated false alarms, as it could mean people became oblivious to them and then, when a fire did occur, reactions may be delayed. Mr Threader very much welcomed the positive impact the work the protection team had been doing in hospitals across Bury.
