Fiber is also known as roughage. It is the indigestible part of plant foods that pushes through our digestive system, absorbing water along the way and easing bowel movements. There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and does a lot of good things for our bodies, such as helping to lower cholesterol. Examples of soluble fiber are: · Dried beans and peas · Oat bran · Oatmeal · Nuts · Barley · Flax seed · Fruits like oranges and apples Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. It moves through the intestines without being absorbed. This type of fiber adds bulk to bowel movements and reduces constipation. Examples of insoluble fiber are: · Vegetables, such as green beans and dark green leafy vegetables · Fruit skins and root vegetable skins · Whole-wheat products · Wheat bran · Corn bran · Seeds & Nuts Experts recommend that we eat 25 to 35 grams of fiber every day. This fiber should be a combination of both soluble and insoluble fiber. As you increase your fiber, be sure to increase your intake of water as well. Water bulks up the fiber and makes it more effective in “sweeping” the intestines and colon. GenaLivings - Healthy Living
