Fifty years ago I was in 7th grade which meant that my class had made the move from New Lisbon Elementary School to Straughn High School. It was a new and kind of exciting time. I remember very clearly being in Study Hall in Room 5 when the principal announced over the intercom that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. How does a 12 year old process something like that? Of course the first thought is who could have done something like this to that nice man who was President. Our enemies were Russia and Cuba so it must be one of them. And what happens now? Will there be atomic bombs dropping on the U.S.? Will the Russians be invading Straughn? It was all very confusing. As it happened, my older brother Danny Wallen was in the same Study Hall and I remember him turning to me and saying that every thing would be all right. Somehow that helped. Im sure anyone who was alive at that time can tell you exactly where they were when they heard that President Kennedy was assassinated.
