Fifty years ago today President Kennedy spoke of a “Strategy for Peace” at the American University. He ignored the Cold War State Department and spoke about rethinking our attitudes toward the Soviet Union and toward peace. He refused to accept the fate of war over the Cuban Missile Crisis, and now refused to accept the fate of continual confrontation with the SU and the inevitability of nuclear war. He resisted the calls for a military action against Cuba and the likely Soviet response. Instead he insisted on a political solution to the Cuban Crisis and he and peace prevailed. Here again he sought a political resolution of the Cold War. Our problems are manmade; therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings." Here is a video of the speech. jfklibrary.org/Asset-Viewer/BWC7I4C9QUmLG9J6I8oy8w.aspx
