Film review and possible spoilers so dont scroll down this post if you have not watch Lucy yet or still intend to. So firstly I will start with this, I watched the trailer for Lucy and looked at the cast and thought that this is right up my street....(there are many worse actresses than scarlett johansson to watch right? And of course the legend that is Mr Freeman) so set about finding the times at my local hall of light and sound (or a Vue in this case) and sat down with my popcorn ready to enjoy the film. Overall a good film with some pleasing action scenes and a tangible story line, good photography and acting. If I stop there it will get an 8 out of 10 I would have thought. (Possible spoiler alert from here on in) But coming away and thinking about it, I cant be help compare it to the 2011 film Limitless. In principle both films offer a similar storyline...our protagonist takes a simple drug which opens up the power and capacity of the human body/brain and grants them huge powers beyond all belief. Sadly this is where the similarity ends. In limitless you follow Eddies journey as his powers increase and his discovery of them and how he can put them to use for good/gain/whatever. In Lucy however she is again granted growing powers after consumption of a drug and yet seems to be instantly able to make full use of these powers. There is also an issue about the insurmountable growth in knowledge that exceeds that which can be gained from spending an hour on a laptop connected to the internet. So the scientists are thrown into the storyline at various parts to spoonfeed us (the viewers) very dumbed down and washy scientific theory and fact in a bid to educate us to the effects and changes Lucy is undergoing. The more I thought about this, the most I felt it was basically just an insult to our intelligence and really wish the script writers had followed a more similar path to that of script writers of Limitless. Sure the critiques would argue that it is basically the same film with a different cast (which arguable it is regardless) but at least it would not feel that the storyline had been written for the same target audience as a Roald Dahl book. Sadly, based on this I can actually only give it an 6 out of 10 score...but dont take my cynical views as gospel as your milage may vary of course. :)
