Films come, films go. But some films, especially those made keeping children in mind, stay with us forever. These could be films from our childhood, or recent films that take us back to it. Here are 10 films that make us wish we were kids again! Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke The blockbuster pair of Aamir & Juhi, a young Kunal Khemu, and the superhit song “Bambai se gayi Poona”, all within the backdrop of a sweet tale of two lovers being united by six children, HHRPK not only entertained us as kids, but continued on to become a classic. Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke Eng Sub Hindi Movie Makdee Shabana Azmi’s brilliant portrayal of the fake evil witch, Shweta’s Prasad’s outstanding twin-sister act, and a stupendous supporting cast brought together by mastermind Vishal Bhardwaj, make Makdee immensely watchable, again and again. makdee Taare Zameen Par Aamir Khan directed this one and how! He not only introduced the problems of a dyslexic child to the Indian sensibility, but also touched upon issues of parent-child/student-teacher relationships, the race to achieve 95% aggregate, and Down Syndrome. Both enjoyable and educative film at the same time. taare zameen par Stanley Ka Dabba A heartwarming story of an orphaned boy who works at a restaurant, but misses it to attend school, while not being able to bring food in his dabba like his other friends. Amol Gupte (also the director) is brilliant as the khadoos Hindi teacher who steals kids’ food, but Partho Gupte (his son) takes the dabba with his amazing performance as Stanley. stanley ka dabba Ajooba Probably one of Bollywood’s first fantasy superhero films and one that Zee Cinema played every alternate day (thank God!), Ajooba introduced us to the concept of magic and special effects in film, and takes us down memory lane every time we watch it even today. ajooba Masoom “Lakdi ki kaathi…”. Nuff’ Said. masoom Koi Mil Gaya Before this movie, the general Indian perception of aliens was them being huge and scary. But Jadoo came along, and while turning mentally disabled kid Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) into the superhero Krrish, he made us all fall in love with him. Indeed, koi mil gaya! koi mil gaya Chachi 420 A kids’ film with extreme similarities to Mrs. Doubtfire, and Kamal Hassan as the Indian Robin Williams. What more can we say! chachi 420 Bhootnath Call it an Indian ode to Casper, the Friendly Ghost, this movie was a fresh take on supernatural films with Amitabh Bachchan seen befriending Sharukh’s and Juhi’s son. In the end, it turns into an emotional tale of friendship between a human and a ghost, and was loved so much that its makers returned with a sequel. bhoothnath Mr. India We leave the best for the last. Perhaps the most entertaining, fun and amazing Bollywood movie for kids, Shekhar Kapur’s directorial genius, coupled with star acts by Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Sridevi, Satish Kaushik and all the dozen kids helped Mr. India being declared one of the 100 greatest Indian films of all time. Rightfully so, because characters like Mr. India, Mogambo, Hawa Hawaii, Calendar etc. remain an integral part of our upbringing, and continue to fascinate the world even today.
