Finally: Our generation has produced a world class paytanit (female singer of Mizrahi piyut, prayer poems). For the last weeks Ive been obsessively listening to Morin Nehedars astonishing debut album, Yesheina bChek Yaldut (Asleep in the Bosom of Childhood --the title comes from a poem by the medieval Spanish Jewish philosopher and poet, Yehudah Halevi). Based largely on the piyut tradition of Iranian Jews, the album effortlessly moves between traditional melodies and exquisite melodies written by Morin, whose genius is write music that feels at once contemporary and traditional. Ive heard Morin perform over the years at concerts devoted to Jewish spiritual music. And Ive wondered when she would grace us with an album. This was well worth the wait.
