Thanks to Lisa Benfield and the star Tuesday October 28, 2014. ’Landers win big on road BY LISA BENFIELD CORRESPONDENT SNEEDVILLE—A long bus ride through some pretty country to Hancock County Friday night proved to be productive for the Cloudland football team as the Highlanders came away with a 42-14 victory over the Indians. The Highlanders kicked off to the Hancock County Indians for the first drive off the game. The Indians wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as three plays later Hancock County’s workhorse, Jacob Baker, ran 42 yards to the end zone. The PAT was blocked by Cloudland’s Noah Arnett. On the Highlanders’ first possession, a pass from QB Austin Whitehead to receiver Zac Benfield for 44 yards put Cloudland in good field position. Colby Birchfield was quick in scoring on a 21-yard run. The PAT failed. The Indians could not get anything going offensively on their next possession, thanks to the defensive play of Cloudland’s James Arwood, Ethan Lusk, Punky Rhinehart, Jonah Woods, Austin Simerly, Birchfield ’Landers ■ Continued from 9 and Whitehead. It was all Cloudland for the remainder of the first quarter, with Whitehead and Birchfield each adding another touchdown. On the defensive end, Cameron Stevens came up with a big stop when he sacked the Indians’ quarterback. Early in the second quarter, the Highlanders got a boost in the arm when Hez Street intercepted the ball. That later turned into another touchdown run by Birchfield. The PAT by Dylen Markland was good, making the score Cloudland 28 to Hancock County 6. On the Indians’ next drive, Dakota Blevins, Ashton Hatfield, Dustyn Peppers, Trent and Baker all worked to help move the ball up the field. A touchdown pass to A.J. Arnold and a two-point conversion by Baker put the Indians up to 14. The halftime score was Cloudland 28, Hancock County 14. The Highlanders wasted little time in scoring in the third quarter when Birchfield cracked the goal line on a 5-yard run. Markland was good on the PAT. Again in the third quarter, Whitehead hit Noah Arnett with a 28yard touchdown pass, and Markland’s PAT was good for a 42-14 Cloudland advantage. Big defensive plays in the final quarter of play by Cloudland’s Matt Houston, Woods, Rhinehart and Benfield stopped the Indians in their tracks. Whitehead sacked the quarterback for a loss of yards. On the night, Whitehead had 136 yards on 15 carries and 97 yards passing while Birchfield totaled 20 carries for 106 yards. Benfield made four catches for 52 yards, with Arnett adding 45 yards on three catches. Birchfield led the way in tackles with nine. Whitehead followed with seven, and Rhinehart had six. Arwood, Simerly and Benfield had five each. Hancock County’s leading tacklers were Baker (7 tackles), Baker (6), Arnold (5), and Alex Tucker (4). On offense, Baker led the way with 181 yards on 23 carries. Cloudland will face county rival Hampton Bulldogs on Thursday night, while Hancock County will play at South Greene.
