Finished my first Civilization V game, yay! Well not first, - TopicsExpress

Finished my first Civilization V game, yay! Well not first, actually this was the third game I started. But this one was the first one played to the end and in victory. Have to say that from the Civilization series the fifth is truly a very good game. It has a lot of brand new ideas to refresh the game - and a good majority of them are imho successful renewals. I especially love the fact that no longer are units allowed to stack up endlessly like in Civ III - which is what annoyed me most there. Too easy! Also a lot of buildings have been redesigned along with basic economics. Granaries no longer store food, they just increase food output, which is a better balance in early stages. Lots of buildings and basic economics have been renewed. And not just that, game mechanics too. I mean cities, they actually defend themselves! Great improvement. And roads cost upkeep? Awesome. So many improvements, hard to list. Feels like a brand new game compared to III. I never played IV that much, only a few games, so cannot remember what had changed there. I also like the fact that game speed can be tweaked along with many other settings. One thing that has annoyed me before has been the fact that things progress way too fast. So now you can slow things down, meaning buildings and tech just takes a longer time to finish - leaving more game time. This game I played was at the Prince level, with the Romans. It was a small map with few civs - since I wanted to finish a game and learn the game mechanics. The first game ended up in total disaster. I had no idea how happiness works in V and did the usual build as many cities as fast as you can tactic. Of course it ended up in disaster as my civ just locked up in unhappiness while everybody else stayed with just a few cities. The second game I moved more cautiously. At some point I had cleaned out the barbarians near me and was quite happily building a little civilization - until I decided to march on an unsuspecting city state. Of course I had no idea how difficult cities are to conquer in V - and I had no idea they fire back at you! My small army was decimated, so I built another. That was decimated too. It was time to quit.. The third game I learned from these mistakes and the Romans slowly took over the world. Here are some pics - unfortunately in low res due to a little mistake with the ImageMagick mogrify command ;) The images feature the last stages of taking out the Greeks and then the Mongolian capital. One more great change in Civ V - victory conditions are less extreme - domination for example requires taking out all the capitals, not everything. Oh hey, a video replay too! https://youtube/watch?v=bCtZ2ehBOOU #games #civilization https://iliketoast.net/p/336093
