Finished my first Olympic distance triathlon on Sunday. Although I - TopicsExpress

Finished my first Olympic distance triathlon on Sunday. Although I won my age group, my time was nothing special. It was a demanding, hilly course. More importantly, I was able to overcome fear and persevere to complete the race (1,500 meter swim, 40k bike, and 10k run). During the swim start, I got bumped fairly hard on both sides as well as from behind by several other swimmers in a mass start. (Imagine swimming in a washing machine like a school of fish.) For a fleeting second or two, because of this panic-inducing experience, and being new to triathlons, the thought crossed my mind to quit and return to the safety of land which was several hundred meters away. Fortunately, I was able to gather myself, get refocused and continue on to the finish some three hours later. My takeaway: We should never let fear control our lives. We are all capable of more than we think, even in the worst of circumstances and darkest moments. It is never as bad as it seems, even if our mind is telling us differently.
