Fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) Hosts: Pear, Apple, Crabapple, Pear, Hawthorne, Serviceberry, Pyracantha, Cotoneaster, Mountain Ash, Flowering Plum. Biology: · The fireblight bacterium overwinters in cankers formed in branches and stems. · Bacteria begin growth in spring and begin oozing from margins of cankers. · Bees are attracted to the bacterial ooze and transfers the pathogen to flowers and from flower to flower where infection occurs. Wind, rainsplash and other insects can spread this bacterium to flowers and shoots. · Once infection occurs, the bacterium can grow into branches and stems causing girdling and dieback and death. · Warm (>60°F) temperatures and frequent rainfall encourage infections.
