First Look: Chinese Wind Steel Jian - Under the hood There is a lot of talk about Chinese jian with rat tail tangs that will fly right out of the handle. While I have personally never seen one fail, I took one of ours completely apart for a detailed look at exactly what is under the silk. The thread has a pretty solid weld to the tang. If that were the only thing keeping the sword together, then I would be concerned. However, the pin in the handle, which most factories skip, is present in the Ronin jian. Traditionally, this is what the Chinese used to anchor their blades, and this pin is right where is should be. Tang is nice and thick. It isnt pretty, but its got everything it needs to prevent the blade from launching out of the handle. Conclusion: Blade is not going anywhere unless this jian is seriously abused. Testing: Ronin breaks at least one of everything we sell, and an $800 jian is no exception. Jason Woodard may be interested in donning his riot gear to push one of these through light, medium, and heavy cutting. Stay tuned.
