First United Methodist Church of Yukon Lenten Devotional, March 12, 2014 My brother is a retired basketball coach. After 40 years of ball games he hung it up a few years ago. He was good. He knew how to coach and the boys showed him great respect. When we were growing up he was a good athlete. Baseball and basketball. Everyday. I especially remember Ted in the gym everyday after school. He was shooting baskets or dribbling the ball. One does not become a good athlete overnight. It takes practice, lots of practice. Disciplined and determined practice. Constant and consistent work. Routine and regular drilling. I learned from my brother. Simple desire is not enough. You have to work at it to become good. It takes discipline. That is true for good musicians as much as good athletes. It is true for good artists, good speakers, good drivers. It is also absolutely true for good disciples. Once we commit our lives to Jesus we have much to learn. Being faithful is hard. Loving and staying close to God requires discipline. The journey with God is all about discipline. We do not have to save ourselves. We cant. But the task of staying close to God is ours. Prayer. Meditation. Solitude. Submission. Study. Simplicity. How are you doing in your disciplines? Like basketball, it takes disciplined work to live as a faithful disciple. As a fruitful believer. Anyone can love Jesus, but only the disciplined follower can understand. Thanks, Ted Younts, for teaching me something about discipline. O Lord, let me be disciplined in your love and determined with your grace. Amen.
