First major windstorm of the winter season. Outsiders think its - TopicsExpress

First major windstorm of the winter season. Outsiders think its the snowstorms, but snow isnt anything compared to the Alaskan wind. It was howling like banshees and the house has been shaking all night. It was raining sideways last evening, though that stopped sometime early this morning and the wind dried everything out. It does seem to be slacking off a bit now. Power went out around 5AM. Thought I was going to have to light off the generators to power up the espresso machine, but the lights came back on around 6:30 - and I bet those utility repair guys could have used a cup right about then. I dont know how they do it, being out in this howling crap, working on live lines in the dark. My hats off to you, MEA. Palmer airport reports sustained winds averaging around 37MPH down on the Valley floor. I live on a hill outside of town here in the MatSu Valley, my windbird is fluctuating between 30-50MPH. The log says some gusts last night were in excess of 75MPH. Anchorage Hillside reported gusts around 105MPH roaring up the Turnagain Arm. Its still pitch dark outside, I cant tell if any trees came down. Fortunately last night before it got dark I went around outside and made sure everything was securely fastened down or put away. Just another morning in Alaska.
