First night in Maejo, Chiang Mai. The temperature dropped to 63°F last night, but it will rise to 90°F by this afternoon. Our drive up to Chiang Mai was uneventful and took about 16 hours split fairly equally over 3 days. A total of 1,340 km traveled. Thats about 833 miles for you non-metric types. Thats about an average speed of 52MPH, not bad considering the bathroom/lunch/fuel breaks that we took. The roads were better on the highway north of Bangkok than in the southern leg. The trip is definitely a daytime endeavor. Some of the road conditions change dramatically and I wouldnt want to come upon these hazards in the dark. Blown tires, bent and cracked rims are common here.
