First review in: JOHN WILKES BOOTH Useless Lucy (Independent) This Long Island doom/stoner rock band sounds like a cross between Black Sabbath and Tool; you can interpret this statement as meaning they are heavy with a modern accessible approach. Again there is a feel hearkening to the 90s; it seems I am hearing this in bands more often of late. The first track “From The North” opens with a haunting tone and promptly becomes heavy, increasing the intensity of the mood created just before. The song is repetitive in a convincing way, utilizing a direct, single-minded style without growing too tedious or predictable. This band seems to be mastering the ability to utilize a riff in this manner to construct convincing songs that aren’t overlong and don’t need to be in the first place. This is also evident in “Masturbation Song” and “Six One.” The vocals go a long way toward building on the atmosphere created by the guitar riffs and the hypnotic themes around them, sinking into low depths of introspection one moment and soaring high the next. The rest of this release shows influence from other musical areas, including “Soaking The Perimeter” which seems to draw on some reggae influence and “Ladder And Vaccuum” which called the Red Hot Chili Peppers to mind. It’s bands such as this that restore my faith in original music from Long Island. -Dave Wolff Autoeroticasphyxium Zine
