Fishing Report. With a forecast of tropical free influences on our local weather, we are looking forward to an active fall fishing season. The water temperature has fallen gradually and at present we have waters around 74degrees. All signs looking good. Our SURF FISHING CHALLENGE this past weekend was just that; a challenge. We’ll blame it on the northeast wind but from the surf the fish were mostly small. BLUEFISH, FLOUNDER, SEA MULLET, POMPANO, SPOT, RED DRUM were all caught but were all on the light side. Ironically, the boats just off the surf were catching large BLUES and SPANISH along with FALSE ALBACORE with ease. The SPANISH bite is still hot with fish from 4-6 lbs being caught just outside the inlet and up and down the beaches. The areas of the Willis lumps and Dead Tree hole have been go-to areas as well. Trolling Clarkspoons, small drone spoons and squid rigs still work well. Big BLUES are hanging around the Cape Lookout shoals. Casting spoons or trolling Clarkspoons will be effective. Also a 37 lb COBIA was caught at the Dead Tree hole so keep your eyes open for them. The nearshore KING bite has been good lately. Trolling live menhaden or dead cigar minnows will be most effective. SEA MULLET and SPOT are being caught in the inlet off the surf, piers and in the Beaufort area. Spec rigs and bloodworms are the way to go. You will also find GRAY TROUT and FLOUNDER. If you’re looking for SPECKLED TROUT the haystacks and Core Creek areas will be your best chance to find them. Haven’t seen any yet off our beaches. Live shrimp with popping corks will do well for the SPECS. When the weather cooperates the offshore bite is strong. WAHOO and BLACKFIN TUNA are the main targets. Skirted ballyhoo are the preferred baits. Pier casters are hooking good numbers of SPANISH and BLUES working gotcha plugs and other casting lures. Some SPOT, SEA MULLET and FLOUNDER in the mix as well. Happy Fishing.
