Five Dead, 35 Still Trapped After Building Collapses in Chennai $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ There was rain, gusty wind, thunder and lightning when the building collapsed in Chennai.. I just wonder how the authorities allowed entrepreneurs to build this type of building that could just simply get washed away in a single days rain. Mind you, this not just a house, but a multi-Storeyed apartment! Luckily the building was not completed and occupied; otherwise it would have been a mass murder with hundreds of people dead and trapped in the rubbles due to greed and negligence of the builders. As expected the people behind the project have absconded. It is obvious that money plays an important role in the field of real estate with the palms of greedy government officials, from the lowest peons to the power-wielding politicians, greased under the table. Today, the state government says it would take the necessary steps to bring to book all the culprits involved in the project. But will the higher ups in the political hierarchy dare to point their fingers at the government functionaries who had given the green signals for the project to take off from the planning tables, and arrest them all? Will the government take rigid action and arrest those involved irrespective of their power and position? At the most, a committee would probably be set up with retired judges, on the verge of meeting their creator, to head the inquiries. And, when the culprits are taken to court the trials would be deferred for years on frivolous grounds. And, after about thirty to forty years the court would let the culprits who are still alive to go scot-free citing insufficient evidence.
