Five Privileges for Muslim Ummah (4) The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “With regard to Ramadan, my Ummah has been granted five bounties which were not granted to nations before them; …. (4) In this blessed month the Shayateen are imprisoned so that they (Muslims) cannot reach to commit that level of sins which they can in months other than Ramadan….” [At-Targheeb wa At-Tarheeb] When the Shayateen (devils) are locked up during Ramadan there is definitely a decrease in the level and quantity of sins that a Muslim commits and an increase in worship and good deeds that we all can witness. However, since throughout the year each person’s Nafs was under training of the Shaytaan, it is the Nafs that continues to incite a person to commit sins even when the Shayateen are gone. The more it had been pampered during the year and allowed to have its way, the stronger will be its incitement in Ramadan. The taste that one develops during the year for sin also keeps one on the track of committing sins. This is why one can still witness Muslims committing sins during Ramadan. Whatever sins you commit in Ramadan originate from your Nafs (self) and are not the result of the immediate promptings of Shaytaan. Ramadan is therefore a good time to witness the condition of your Nafs (how much it inclines to evil) and subdue it through fasting, which deprives it of what it desires, thereby weakening it.
