Five held for illegally using power KURSEONG, 24 Jul 2014: Five persons who used to illegally disconnect power in the Tindharay region were today hauled up and identified by the electricity department. The Kurseong West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, (Customer Care Kurseong Centre) assistant engineer Dipen Khawas said a team from the town had visited the Tindharay region and also conducted raids regarding the illegal connection of electricity line. He said five people from various areas of Tindharay have been hauled up and be careful going forward. Khawas said that out of the five houses or five persons, three are from Naya Kaman, Tindharay, a house from Bholay village and third were from Tindharay’s Cricket Bazaar. He said a strong decision has been undertaken under the electricity department act and if they fail to overlook the department’s directive, legal action will be taken against them as per the Electricity Theft Act. Khawas further said if a person is caught red handed, Rs50,000 in fines can be slapped against him. He said nobody in the right frame would want to send them to jail and fine them; “Instead, we want to make them aware they should always use and apply legal connections in their houses and institutions. The AE also to fool the department, the residents who have been identified had shown their own legal electricity connections and metres but underneath the cover, had been using and connecting electricity from poles which is grossly illegal.
