Flag Ceremony at Sunset Beach, Cape May, NJ August 2, 2014 This evenings ceremony honors American Hero, Herman F. Sack Today we honor the memory of WW II veteran- PFC Ranger Herman F. Sack. Awarded the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service with Battle Star, American Campaign with Battle Star, Combat Infantryman Badge 2nd Award, Europe – Africa - Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations Medal with 4 battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation and many others. Herman Forman Sack was born and raised in Collingwood, NJ. While attending college to become an accountant, he was drafted into the US Army. His was the second number pulled on December 10th, 1940. Herman completed his training at Fort Dix, NJ, earning the Sharpshooter Pin for rifle distance at 500 yards. He was a member of the 44th division, 113th Infantry, Company C. The next few years found Herman in Long Island, NY. Here he helped guard the Grumman Aircraft Plant and remove Nazi sympathizers, the “Nazi Bund” from the area. His unit also assisted the US Coast Guard in patrolling the beaches and capturing Nazi saboteurs that had landed there in an attempt to bomb New York City and poison the drinking water. Herman married his sweetheart, Frances, in September of 1942. Then it was off to England and training in Scotland with the British Commandos in preparation for the Invasion of Normandy. Herman was now a member of the 5th Ranger Battalion, Headquarters Company. After landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, the Rangers fought from hedgerow to hedgerow to Cherbourg, and on to fight at Fortress Brest where Herman earned the Bronze Star. Continuing onward to Belgium and then into Luxemburg. Here, Herman became a combat wireman with the 8th Division, Signal Corps laying communication wire behind enemy lines. Then it was on to fight in the Huertgen Forrest and next the Battle of the Bulge. Pushing further into Germany, Herman saw the true horror of the Holocaust as he helped liberate concentration camps. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, the Sack’s moved briefly back to Collingwood where Herman took a job with NJ Bell telephone Company. Just as they were settled in, Bell Telephone transferred Herman to the office in the Atlantic City area. Herman and his wife moved to Brigantine, just north of Atlantic City, in 1946 where they lived for 60 years. Here he helped organize a Cub Scout Pack and became a founding charter member of the Brigantine Kline-McAnney American Legion Post. He literally helped build the building – laying bricks and foundation in the evenings after work. Mr. Sack joined the Brigantine ”Civilian Defense” Auxiliary Police in the early 1950’s, and was an active member for over 25 years. They also raised two daughters. Herman loved all kinds of animals, especially dogs. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and traveling the USA in his RV. Mr. Sack passed away in 2011 at the age of 94. Today, Herman is survived by his younger daughter and her husband, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
