Flagstaff Police Department MEDIA RELEASE Contact: Sgt. Margaret Bentzen (928) 556-2300 LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT GRADUATE FROM CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM TRAINING Flagstaff Police Department (11-24-2014). Flagstaff Police Department started the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) in 2008 after two years of research and development. CIT is a national model that has been adopted by law enforcement agencies in more than 40 states. On November 17th through the 20th, 2014, the Flagstaff Police Department, in partnership with The Guidance Center, hosted a Mental Health Crisis Intervention Team training program for local law enforcement officers, detention center officers, first responders, and hospital security members. There were 24 graduating participants from Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Flagstaff Medical Center, and The Bureau of Indian Affairs. CIT provides specialized training for police officers on how manage calls involving mental illness and behavioral health relate crises. Officers learn to recognize the signs of psychiatric distress and how to de-escalate individuals in crisis. In addition, officers learned how to link people with appropriate treatment, which fosters mental health recovery and reduces recidivism. Some of the topics covered were mental health first aid, serious mental illness overview, childhood abuse warning signs, community resources, case management, and crisis system navigation. This training gives a greater understanding among our community’s first responders of issues confronting those with behavioral health and substance abuse problems. It helps strengthen interagency coordination and communication. We would like to thank our partners who provided assistance. Trainers included staff from The Guidance Center, Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Department, NAMI Flagstaff, NARBHA, Coconino County Attorney’s Office, and several representatives of area resource organizations.
