Flames and spark-filled clouds of smoke billowed into the sky at the corner of 15th Street and Sixth Avenue as a fire spread from a small grocery to adjoining houses and a two-story apartment building. Firemen who had been fighting the blaze had long since withdrawn under a hail of rocks from the rioters. A squad of irregulars wearing sports shirts, slacks and GI helmets swung down the street, some with double-barrel shotguns over their arms. A Negro emerged from the entrance way of the motel and shouted across the street to the irregulars: We dont have any guns. Why do you have guns? Excerpt from The New York Times, May 13, 1963*.
