Flash Bristow 4 hrs · Question about the cone of shame (would have posted to Cosmics page but FB is playing up, will post there when I can): Does C really need to wear one? Cray didnt get one when he was neutered, and he was a similar size / weight. With Commodore we have been told C has to wear it for 10 days, but he hates it, and it doesnt stop him licking the wound anyway as it isnt big enough for that. He can reach the wound with his cone on. C has internal stitches only, stops licking when we tell him to, and was notably happier once I took the cone off. He knocked it off when getting into his Tuffie bed anyway as it is only held on by a loose bandage. And I have to take it off for him to eat or drink, he cant manage either with it on so I dont know if he is thirsty when it is on as he is just quiet. If I supervise him, surely it is ok to leave the cone off? And I can just cone him when Im going out, if he keeps licking? Tho he sleeps when Im out, anyway. And he wont be alone for more than 30 mins over the next few days. Some vet websites say it isnt always necessary to cone, or it is only needed for 3 days, but as our vet told us 10 days I think hubby wants to abide by that. Surely I can use my judgement here? C is back to his usual self now but I think would be withdrawn again if I put the cone back on. He is so intelligent and intuitive, if I tell him not to lick he will trust me tho he really wants to lick.. But he doesnt understand the cone and I cant explain it to him. Also for anyone wondering, C was very sore and unhappy when we took him home, and blissed out and confused on painkillers (the vet did say he did very well under anaesthetic so she had been able to give ample pain relief to go home with) but after a kind of doped up sleep, lots of hand fed liver treats, a meal of kibble and tuna, and half an hour spooning on the lawn after dark (one of his favourite things, we love our late night soul-searching sessions talking rubbish together late at night on a summers evening!) he has come upstairs to bed not bothered by the stairs at all, and gone to sleep next to our bed as usual. Im hoping we can escape without the cone, or just keep it as a threat for if he doesnt stop licking when told. But if Im making a mistake please let me know. Would be grateful. 4 hrs · Like Flash Bristow Lying on the lawn with C on a cool summers evening is the only thing I like about summer. Neither of us wanted to leave, we could have laid there in each others arms all night. Maybe I should get Mike to put the tent up so pup and I can camp out. The tent is about as big as our garden tho... 4 hrs
