Flash Gordon, the savior of the universe Eduardo Serradilla Sanchis “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before”. For most these were the words that introduced them to space adventures, beyond what was known to the human race. However, before the Enterprise ever launched, the space had been the background for first Polo player and then hero of the rebellion against the evil Emperor Ming, better known as Flash Gordon. And we can also go even further back in history to find other characters who lived their adventures away from planet Earth. Indeed, Captain John Carter and Buck Rogers are fine examples of this, but having said this neither Edgar Rice Burroughs’ nor Philip Francis Nowlan’s creations managed to leave a mark as big as Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon did. Part of the reason behind this, without diminishing Alex Raymond’s talent, could be the three movie serials about the character which were shown between 1936 and 1940. Those movie serials, packed with the aesthetics Raymond proudly displayed during his career, influenced a young Californian guy called George Lucas when he reinvented the Flash Gordon myth, i.e. Star Wars. Two years later, in 1979, -riding on the wave of popularity generated by Lucas’s film astounding success- Buck Rogers made a come-back, this time to the small screen. Nevertheless, as it had happened with the movie serial in 1939, the TV series starring Gil Gerard didn’t manage to captivate the audience’s attention. The situation repeated itself with the 1980 Flash Gordon film and with the 1984 film The Last Starfighter, another version of the Flash Gordon story, this time mixed with the dawn of videogames. Space is the final frontier and Flash Gordon, no matter in which century, the savior of the universe. This black box which can be seen is the ORIGINAL box for the Flash Gordon Go Hero figure. This box captures the essence of the character and helps the figure to stand out. Special thanks to Steve Forde, from Go Hero for sending this wonderful box.
