Flawless Albums Series #3: Ayreon - The Human Equation I knew this would be on the list from the first time I heard it, about five years ago now. I may have found Ayreon through the guest appearance from James LaBrie of Dream Theater, whom I was beginning to listen to at the time, and I certainly found many incredible bands because of Ayreon inviting so many of their musicians on their recordings. Ayreon are a megalopolis of progressive rock and metal, and for once, the musical output reflects the raw talent involved. Everything about this album screams ingenious, from its psychological concept to its broad musical spectrum and almost unbearable emotional depth. Joy, sorrow, laughter, alienation, betrayal, resentment, despair, solitude, heartbreak, grief, hope, friendship, pity, guilt, forgiveness, redemption, and triumph. All done to absolute perfection in the most accessible package conceivable. Forays into death metal, pop, world music, and ambient seem completely natural to even the pickiest of listeners, done to fit the storyline as needed. So anybody could find themselves relating to some part of the story about a business executive trapped inside his own mind and emotions after a mysterious car accident, going through a literal purgatory as he understands every good and bad choice he has ever made. I have experienced most of these life situations: childhood loneliness, poor self-esteem, bullying in school, and turbulent relationships with my parents, so I find the album beyond cathartic. There is always at least one part of the album I can barely make it through. Usually several. Sometimes about half of it. Its hard to decide if The Human Equation is the album I have the hardest time listening to, because Oblivious to the Obvious is also in the running. But its at least number two. It is an absolute masterpiece of human emotion. But its almost too much of a masterpiece.
