Flood Fury: Toll 261 37 deaths reported from Srinagar Umer Maqbool Srinagar, Sept 18: The floods have reportedly claimed as many as 261 lives in the State as several parts of Srinagar and other flood-affected districts of Kashmir continue to be inundated for the past 12 days. While the government has maintained silence over the flood-related causalities, sources disclosed that 261 persons have died across the State. Of them 71 deaths have taken place in Kashmir while remaining 190 deaths have been reported from Jammu. According to sources, 37 deaths have been reported from different areas of Srinagar which was hit by the devastating floods on September 7. Over the past 12 days, life has come to a grinding halt in Srinagar as government has failed to de-water submerged areas like Lal Chowk, Jawhar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Magarmal Bagh, Bemina and Batamaloo. The floods have displaced thousands of people here besides causing colossal loss to life and property. Repeated attempts to get details about the fatalities in Kashmir proved futile. “I am busy in the meeting,” Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Rohit Kansal told over phone when asked about the fatalities. Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantamanu confirmed that 190 deaths have been reported in the region. “So far we have reports of 190 deaths while another 20 persons are missing,” he said.
