Flora, Fauna, Habitat: Have you heard about the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School, and the Keep Safe Project? Local Rhinebeck, NY artists and retailers are collaborating to raise public awareness for the plight of endangered species, focusing on cheetahs and lemurs! The KeepSafe Project is an annual fundraiser to support the work of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) and the Lemur Conservation Foundation, organizations dedicated to the conservation of these endangered species. Did you know that the Trevor Zoo is one-of-a-kind? It is, in fact, the only zoo in this country that is located at a high school. The zoo was established in 1936 at Millbrook School, a coeducational independent high school in Millbrook, New York. Its founder, Frank Trevor, was Millbrook School’s first biology teacher and a man with a passion for sharing his love of wildlife with all people, especially children. KeepSafe Project is the result a growing commitment by Paola Bari to support efforts to reestablish safe environments for the African Cheetah. Paola has been involved with Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) for a number of years and has supported them through donations and fund raisers, as well as traveling to Namibia to work directly with the CCF as a volunteer. It was the impact of her experiences at CCF last fall (remove) that prompted Paola to want to take a more impactful role in this effort. Envisioning a local fund raising project that would bring grassroots attention and funding to the plight of animals around the world, Paola sought advice from Kris Perry, an experienced fund raiser and project manager. Kris has worked with the Childrens Community Trust (CCTR) of Rhinebeck and their highly successful birdhouse auctions for a number of years. Keepsafe Project is a result of their joint effort.
