I am very glad that New Jack Swing is getting some attention. Its very difficult to appreciate current pop music without recognizing the influence of New Jack Swing. I do find it criminal that Mary J. Blige isnt mentioned. I think shes the first one to embody the stylistic marriage that is New Jack Swing - hip hop beats under soulful vocals. That describes Bobby Brown, Toni Toni Tone, En Vogue and Johnny Gill. To me, Real Love, by Mary J. Blige is the epitome of New Jack Swing. So - how did we get from there to here - well i would argue that the combo of this high flying genre and the explosion of east/west coast rap, led to the Puff Daddy generation of hip hop/r&b: the rap + sung hook. Which I think takes you directly to Beyonce singing/speaking/rapping her way through Destiny Child songs...and then breaking into the bests hooks you can buy.
