[Focusing on a pipeline or two, deflects attention from the shale gas issue.] TJ NOV 25 MP accuses Liberals of ‘double-speak’ on shale gas CHRIS MORRIS LEGISLATURE BUREAU FREDERICTON • A New Brunswick MP has slammed the new Liberal provincial government for using “doublespeak” on the issue of shale gas development. John Williamson, the Conservative MP for New Brunswick Southwest said in a statement in the House of Commons on Monday that after just two months in office, Premier Brian Gallant has muddied the issue of a proposed moratorium on hydraulic-fracturing for shale gas. “Minister of Energy Donald Arsenault now says that he’ll allow “some fracking,” Williamson said. “Premier Brian Gallant now says there are different ‘types’ of moratoriums he’ll consider. “Mr. Speaker, this is unbelievable double-speak. New Brunswick will succeed by allowing the development of its God given resources. I stand in this House today to tell the premier it is time to eat crow, admit you were wrong about fracking and signal to the rest of the world that New Brunswick is open for business.” Gallant recently said his Liberal government is looking into the “types of moratoriums” it could implement That followed a comment by Arseneault, who suggested that a “regional” moratorium might be an option the government would consider – an idea Gallant later ruled out. No one from the government responded to Williamson’s remarks made fairly late in the afternoon on Monday. Gallant was in Ontario where he met with Premier Kathleen Wynne. Williamson said in an interview that the confused messages coming out of New Brunswick are alienating for businesses and workers. “Governments, to be successful have to have a consistent message and clear policy so that entrepreneurs businesses and hard-working individuals will understand the environment they are operating in” he said.
