Folks I am very excited to announce a new project that is blooming. Cindy Milstein and I are now embarking on the beautiful work of co-editing an anthology that explores grief as transformation. We are in the early stages of developing our call for submissions, but there is wonderful momentum behind the impulse. Here are some of the ways were framing this work. As Cindy writes, grief transforms us; […] perhaps grief can be a key today to transform society [… we want to explore] how grief impacts us and our communities if we are to maintain our sanity, not to mention any ability or desire for social transformation. Were looking at the intersection of personal experiences as they are situated within, gesture towards, give testimony to, the ways in which broader sociopolitical forces are at play in our world and our lives; losses that are both personal and communal. At the same time, were interested in exploring the transformative value of grief as a tool that encourages us to engage with the truths and complex politics that shape the communities and societies within which we live; the ways in which grief can be mobilized as a tool for uncovering our creative capacity to hold each other, generate creative alternatives that encourage mutuality, remind us of interdependence, instil an ethics of care. Kinda revolutionary. Were particularly committed to centring the voices of those who are women-identified, feminists, GBLTQI, Two Spirit, Indigenous, people of color, those seen as mad or disabled; as Cindy says, the voices that too often go unheard, the bodies that too often do the invisibilized labor of care, the sensitive souls who too frequently hold the grief of others as well as their own. If you want to stay up on all our thinking, receive our Call for Contributions in early December 2014, and remain up to date on the development of the anthology, please send me your email (for now, ℅ mia.susan.amir(at)gmail), and Ill add you, consent willing, to the Transforming Grief MailChimp e-announcement list.
