ONE COUNTRY, ONE PEOPLE PRESS RELEASE (Freetown - July 29, 2014) The Sierra Leone Peoples Party is grief-stricken by news of the tragic death of Dr. Sheikh Omar Khan. On behalf of the Leadership and the entire membership of our party, we join the people of Sierra Leone in mourning the death of a true hero of our nation. We pray that Allah in His infinite mercy will grant him Al Jannah. We also pray for the bereaved family: May God give them the strength to weather their loss. In his life’s work, Dr. Khan epitomised the true meaning of selflessness and patriotism. He represented our nation’s hope in our fight against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). When news broke that he had contracted the deadly virus, the whole nation prayed that he may survive and live to tell the story; sadly he has not. In his death, the nation is faced with the reality of the real challenges of combating the disease. His untimely death makes clear that despite the reluctance of the Government to declare the spread of the EVD a National Health Emergency, the situation meets that threshold. We therefore call on Government to declare a State of Public Health Emergency without further delay and to allocate meaningful resources to the efforts to contain the spread of the disease and to stem further unnecessary loss of precious lives. We also urge Government to prioritise the protection of our health workers, who are on the frontlines of this “war”. In the meantime, we call on the public to exercise restraint and to desist from doing anything that could spread panic within society. We also call on the public to cooperate fully with the health authorities, and to take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. We ask for your continued support and cooperation with efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
