Folks, before you go all Lets close the borders and send them back home, consider: What would YOU do as a parent to get your children away from - - A country that suffered through a civil war that lasted over 30 years - A country historically ruled by a series of military dictatorships - a country with nearly 70 percent unemployment in terms of stable, permanent, wage-earning jobs - A country where a family business might consist of 3 or more generations of the same family opening the same gate for the same plantation, with the entire family occupying an 8 by 8 cinderblock hut next to the gate so that someone would be available 24/7, or of walking unprotected up the center line of a 4 or 6 lane thoroughfare in the middle of a city the size of Philadelphia selling cellphone car chargers to people stuck in traffic. - A country so socially stratified, that the majority of children do not see the inside of a school past 4th grade. Thats Guatemala. And those are the mothers and children who have braved a journey of a thousand miles only to end up in a detention camp in California where comfortable white folks are turning busses away, protesting, sometimes throwing rocks and bottles. Before you advocate for machine gun emplacements , death ray lasers, or any other fancy border barriers , consider what you would do for your children in order to gain even the faintest promise of a better life then what theyve known.
