Follow up on our Jacksons nasal cancer: Dr. Dustin Lewis, radiation oncologist at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital (in Tinton Falls, NJ) is outstanding! Young, very knowledgeable about the latest and greatest, answered all our questions.... No hesitation, no hemming and hawwing,....very direct! With a degree from Purdue, he did his residencies at Colorado State and North Carolina State. News we received was very encouraging. Unlike standard radiation treatments which can be 16 - 20 treatments, the stereotactic radiation treatments, in this case delivered by Linear Acceleration, will be 3 treatments over the next 3 days (Tues-Thurs). This treatment is targeted/pinpointed so precisely to the tumor it will spare surrounding tissue, including no damage to his eyes and brain. Tumor will start shrinking almost immediately and he will feel relief and more himself within days. Some tumors shrink so extensively that 1.5 - 2 years of quality life can be attained.....some tumors may not reoccur. But, if the tumor starts to regrow, this treatment can be repeated, unlike some standard radiation treatments that cannot. I so hated to leave him there for 3 days but at almost a 6 hour round trip daily Im not sure that would really be good for him either. The thought entered my mind to have my husband leave me there for the next 3 days in a hotel nearby and Id walk over to visit him daily, but I really need to work the next couple of days. Mark reminded me that we did leave him for 2 1/2 days at Univ of Penn when he had his torn ACL repaired 2 years ago. As we were leaving my eyes welled up with tears saying good-bye to my pup and Dr. Lewis put his hand on my shoulder and told me he would be just fine - they have staff at this facility 24/7 and that he would call us every day to let us know how things are going. Looking forward already to Thursday when we can go pick him up! Thank you all for best wishes in the previous post!
