Follow up to the last post: I am always quick to correct someone when they refer to Island Athlete as “CrossFit”, and from the outside looking in I understand the confusion. While we share similar exercises, movements, and equipment we are completely different in our training methods. It is “behind the scenes” where we shine and they ultimately falter. Here are a few of the many ways we differ: • We train to become better outside of the gym. We are not a sport, but a training program to enhance your performance in your sport, life, and survival situations. • We believe that strength takes priority over metabolic conditioning. While METCONS have their place, being strong and durable carries over to the field more than having a 6 pack. • We use periodized programming to cycle through strength, work capacity, and stamina. Much time is spent developing and programming each session for a specific purpose and desired outcome. Nothing is random and everything is measurable. • Most of our sessions last 60 min and often include specialized durability, core strength, and mental toughness programmed in. CrossFit has done a tremendous job bringing fitness mainstream. Because of their efforts equipment, supplements, and huge array of other training toys and gadgets are more easily accessible to everyday people. Coach Glassman has revolutionized the way current society views fitness and I believe fitness, as a whole, will continue to grow. With that said however, Island Athlete is again NOT CrossFit, and for that I am thankful.
