Following comments indicating a certain confusion about this sport - I give you: Paragliding - in a nutshell. Paragliding is a sport that developed from parachutes. Gradually people came to realise that, like hang gliders, parachutes could be designed more like aerofoils that could glide and even climb if the conditions were right. Paragliding is NOT like base jumping, wing suit flying or any other parachute-style extreme sport. The aerofoil (or wing) is flying before the pilot leaves the ground. Competition paragliding involves lots of pilots flying several tasks (like sailing races) over several days. Each task is a course, determined on the day, depending on weather conditions. Competitors fly the course and have to reach one or more waypoints (using a GPS) on the map before flying to the final point, the goal. Points are awarded for speed and distance. The person who consistently covers the most ground in the fastest time wins. Easy!
