When I say “What shall I do?” Say, “Just Do It”. OPENING: The year 2015, a new year is just around the corner. Have you made your New Year’s resolution? Raise your hand. None of you yet? Okay, what shall I do? “Just do it.” Thank you. So, my resolution is “Just Do It,” which sounds too easy and too simple. But, it’s not easy for me these days. Is it simply because of procrastination? Because, I even procrastinate going to the bathroom from the bed to wake up in the mid-night. Does anyone have the same experience? Don’t raise your hand. Good evening fellow members and most welcomed guests. BODY(1) Looking back my younger days over the past 50 years, I had full of power and a spirit of “Just Do It.” I should say I was like toastmaster KK who is with us here tonight - so active, outgoing and brilliant, who raise his hand volunteering to do something good. In the past, I had worked for 4 different airlines starting from Cathay Pacific Airways, Northwest Airlines, Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airlines. You can imagine how enthusiastic I was to challenge on many airlines. Each time I had good reasons why I was headhunted for better positions. I was neither capricious nor playing around for changing jobs. My Airlines’ career started when I was 24 years old, I saw a help-wanted ad of Cathay Pacific in the Japan Times. Position was a traffic officer at Osaka International Airport. I had lived in Osaka at that time. I could not speak English well. But, an interview was held in English by a British General Manager. I still remember his name was Mr. Cheetam, who had a grave and serious look, a graduate of Oxford University. Seeing my resume, he said, “Oh, Peter, your hobby is magic! It’s very interesting. Show me some.” I was so surprised at his request and replied, “I am sorry sir, I have no gadget with me now.” “Well, do not worry about it, magician can do anything!” He said don’t worry about it but I worried much. I had no choice. What shall I do? “Just Do It. “ So, I took out a box of matches from my pocket. Thanks I was smoking at that time, even now…. So, I had showed him like this….. (Show Magic to the audience) Mr. Cheetam was very pleased with a big smile. The interview went on very smoothly and successfully, and I was hired by Cathay Pacific. BODY (2) After working hard for 4 years at Cathay Pacific, another opportunity came along to move to Northwest Airlines. This time around, Airport Manager of Northwest Airlines, an acquaintance of mine at the airport, persuaded me to apply for their vacant positon of Assistant Aircraft Dispatcher working at the Haneda Airport in Tokyo. The job was a technical expert for making flight plans for the pilots. They would give me professional trainings at their head office in Minnesota, U.S.A. If I got a license of Aircraft Dispatcher issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (so called, FAA), my salary would be gone up more than five times. But, I must move my living from Osaka to Tokyo where I had no friends at all. I said myself, “Just Do It!” So, I took it and my new life started in Tokyo. Ladies and gentlemen, if I had not seized this opportunity, I could never ever have met Cheese, my lovely wife in Tokyo. After working four years at Northwest, I left the airlines. I went to the aviation school in Florida, U.S.A. and obtained the FAA’s License of Aircraft Dispatcher. What happened after that? Lots of stories continue, however, let me to go back to the beginning of my story. Back to the future: 40 years later. BODY (3) After retirement, I lost my interest in new things. Power of my engine waned and brought me to procrastination. I was doing nothing hanging around my apartment like a stray dog. My wife was worried about me and said, “Peter, you must do something good.” She encouraged me to start my Calligraphy Class as I had done when I lived in Ethiopia. I said, “That’s a good idea. But What shall I do? “Just Do It.” Now my Calligraphy class, named, “Dragon Art Calligraphy Class” will start from January, next year. I will start my school of Dragon-Wave like a masterpiece (here) which was displayed at the calligraphy exhibition held in Bangkok last year. CONCLUSION Do you know Mother Teresa ? She was a Catholic sister and recipient of 1979 Nobel peace prize. Mother Teresa said: • Life is a challenge, meet it. • Life is a tragedy, confront it. • Life is a game, play it. Ladies and gentlemen, as Mother Teresa said, we must be outgoing and brave to meet with many scenes of our lives. I have now strong motto to re-vitalize my life, that is: (右手を上げて皆に言ってもらう) “Just Do It.” Toastmaster of the day.
