Following up: The big lump is actually in my parotid gland, not in my lymph node. I need surgery to have it removed. I will get surgery to have it removed. I will put the surgery off until around the holidays due to the fact that it will require a general anaesthetic and they cant get me in before the fall semester starts, and I dont want to deal with being half out of my mind and exhausted for a week or two in the middle of the semester. At the point theyre assuming that the tumor is benign, but regardless they want to get it out, in part so as to avoid it *becoming* malignant, as odd lumps have a way of doing. Still, as my doc pointed out, if it was already cancerous Id have been dead from it years ago already. The lump on the *right* side is probably just a minor swelling of the lymph node, but theyre going to extract a bit of it while they have me on the table, just to be sure. Theyre also going to remove a growth on my septum, which again has been there for years. Theyll biopsy a bit of everything just to be certain none of it is cancerous, but at this point it appears that the most life-threatening thing going on is the surgery, which is a fairly major procedure but still outpatient. Biggest risk involves the nerves in that part of my face; in rare circumstances facial paralysis can result; in slightly less rare circumstances I may lose the feeling in my earlobe. Obviously as its going to be a general anaesthetic, all of the risks that go along with that are also a factor. This will be the only serious surgery Ive ever had, unless you count the stitches I got after the DEATHCAR accident in 2005. Still, I would have gotten a chuckle out of qualifying for a medical cannabis card, now that Im at a point in my life where I rarely smoke anymore.
