Following up on yesterdays discussion re: deprive-then-binge cycle. I used to do cheat meals weekly. And I still think they can be helpful for those just getting started on their journey as a way to get started with mindfulness. But over time, and for those who want to find ease with food and less obsession in general, I believe they end up doing more harm than good because they keep us mired in the on and off dieting mentality. Which can end up becoming extreme awareness to the point of depriving and then binging, week after week, the same routine. Ughhhhh. Remember, as scary as a moderate approach can feel or even as much of a failure as it can seem at times (its not -- to me, its success), we keep trying to make the 4 days on/3 days off way of doing things work, and week after week, we see that it doesnt. So why not take a chance on a new way? The old deprive-then-binge will always be there for you if you need it (you wont) ;) Heres why I stopped doing cheat meals/days a few years back, and the 3 steps I took to transition into the #moderation365 approach instead:
