Food Snob Review Cafe Campagne, Hudson, Quebec. Greg and I - TopicsExpress

Food Snob Review Cafe Campagne, Hudson, Quebec. Greg and I went to Cafe Campagne yesterday for brunch. The place was chock-a-block! I hate standing on line, but, the restaurant was so heavily recommended, we had to try it. Fortunately, its a breakfast joint, at that time of day, so, the turnover was really quick. Although, the single guy hogging the table for four in the corner managed to single-handedly annoy everyone standing on line waiting for a table. The cafe is quite quaint, they really only seat about 30 people and we didnt ask, but they dont seem to take reservations. And bring your interac card or cash because they dont take credit cards. Greg ordered poached eggs, with bacon, homefries and whole wheat toast, and a side of hollandaise sauce and half a belgian waffle. I ordered the poached eggs with sausage and the multi-grain bread. (We were playing it safe). Well, the bread came. Both nice country loafs, but Im unsure the whole wheat bread wasnt store-bought commercial. I didnt taste Gregs waffle, but he says they were light and crisp and the table syrup was real pure maple syrup, the fresh strawberry was a nice touch, but we didnt taste it. In fact, we didnt eat any of the fruit garnishes on the plates at all, but then, we dont normally eat the fruit. The potatoes although deep fried, were not oily in any way. Greg ate all of his. The eggs were beautifully poached freestyle, and served in a little bowl, separate from the rest of the food on the plate. Nice touch as breaking the yolks would have soaked everything. The sausage was really salty, but edible. Id have preferred had they been homemade sausage rather than the commercial ones you can get at the grocery store, but they were good. The bacon was crisp, not too salty, but good. So good, Id have actually liked a slightly thicker slice. The coffee was good and plentiful. The servers doted on the customers, and cheerful, they seem to like working there. If you dont like coffee, the menu suggested that they have an ample tea selection to choose from. Its not a perfect restaurant, because Its still not quite the snuff were looking for in a local homemade style eatery, but hey, its the best weve seen so far! They get it mostly right. Prepare yourself for a wait at the door, but we highly recommend giving Cafe Campagne a try. Its not pure organics or 100% artisan, but it was really good. We will go back. Brunch for two without liquor (they had a samosa option) will set you back about $30.
